Introduction
Puppies are so sweet and gentle. They are incredibly cute and cuddly, but sometimes they can become quite a disaster. Puppies learning to take care of themselves may need a bit of assistance as they grow. If your puppy has long fur, he may end up with a poopy bottom. Before he understands his place in his new world, he may even step in his own poop a few times before he walks away from it. Cleaning him up before letting him into your house will be imperative if you would like to keep your house nice and neat.
Dog's Perspective
Poop left on your dog's skin and in his fur can cause irritation and itching. Once your puppy poops, he is usually a pretty happy dog. He might be excited and jumping around, so your biggest challenge may be getting him to settle down long enough to clean him up.
Caution & Considerations
- Consider wiping your puppy each time he poops so he's clean each time. This way the poop won't dry and become a bigger mess.
- Check under his tail to ensure that is clean as well. The area on the bottom of his tail may hide poop you don't notice just looking at his bottom.
- Poop left on your dog's hiney can cause itching and irritation.
- If poo left on his skin becomes too dry, wiping might not be enough, you may need to bathe him.
- Though a bath for poop removal may only need a small amount of water, having your puppy sit in the water can help loosen or soften to poop for easier cleaning. This soaking might assist with getting poop out of his fur as well.
- Many rescue dogs from poor conditions are found with a condition called pseudocoprostasis, which is a condition that occurs when there is so much poop built up in the fur, the dog cannot go anymore because the area is blocked.
- You'll know if your puppy's bottom needs attention outside of normal everyday wiping if he is scooting across the floor or carpet.
Conclusion
Many puppies are too busy to stop and wipe. They might need your help wiping. Others don't care or notice they need to be wiped. Just be sure to bathe on a regular basis and pay attention to any signs your little guy might need help getting his backside clean. This will keep your house cleaner and keep him smelling fresh.

One is having trouble pooping ut jas dried loop on its butt
Hello H.Melinn, Being a groomer I do not feel qualified to answer a question about a 4 week old puppy that is having trouble with a bowel movement. I think due to the young age of little Liie, the best thing would be to contact your veterinarian for advice to be on the safe side. Your veterinarian can provide you with a remedy and advice to ensure that Liie stays healthy. I hope all goes well!

Is it okay to wipe our puppy clean on everyday basis with warm water. If it is okay to wipe everyday, should we add anything like lavender oil or just plain water should be fine? Thanks!
Hello, I would not worry about wiping Odie every day. I don't expect your pup is getting too dirty just yet. But if you do feel it is necessary, I would use plain water. My recommendation is to not add lavender oil. You can also buy gentle puppy wipes for wiping Odie down. The most important thing is to not let a chill occur. Dry Odie thoroughly and do the wiping in a warm area. Also, brushing daily will also do a great job to keep the coat clean. Good luck and all the best to Odie!
